Seminyak: Balinese Prestige

2308413748_d2e25141b4_b

While visiting the southern end of Bali, why not make it a point to visit the beach town of Seminyak. This exclusive area north of Legian is the more upscale area where you can find many privately own houses and people willing to pay the higher Bali villa rent. Here you can find some of the more luxury accommodations and fashionable restaurants and bars. The atmosphere is one of sophistication and is more laid back than Kuta. The beaches are quieter and you can find some of the most amazing shopping and spas in the area.

A decade ago this was actually a small backwater village and when developments started in the area, it happened at an amazing pace. The developments pretty much overtook the forest lands and grassy areas between Seminyak and Legian in order to build the posh boutiques, high end spas and high priced Bali villa complexes. Now you can’t really discern where Seminyak ends and small villages such as Petitenget, Kerobokan and Umalas begin. One thing that the increased local income brought was a large area filled with shops, homes, and such instead of the natural beauty that was there before.

One of the main draws to the area besides the shopping and relaxing and pampering spas are the beaches. This beach extends for as far as the eye can see and at the south end it eventually becomes Legian Beach and then Kuta Beach. But the beaches near Seminyak are noticeably quieter than Legian and Kuta beaches. The sunsets at Seminyak and Petitenget Beaches are truly spectacular and one of the most famous on the island.  You may even find a chance to rub elbows with some wealthy and famous people while checking out high end beach establishments like Ku Da Ta and La Luciola. Afterwards you can go back to your Bali villa, relax and run through your memories to enjoy the evening once again.

If you are interested in seeing more of Bali’s Hindu religious places, then you can visit some of the area temples. Pura Petitenget is a small but beautiful temple where you can view a few of its beachside ceremonies.  It isn’t one of the famous nine directional temples but it is a link in the west coast temples between Pura Uluwatu and Pura Tanah Lot, which was what their designer, Dang Hyang Nirartha, had in mind. If adventure is what you seek then a visit to AJ Hackett Bungy should be included in your stay this part of the island. Here you can plummet over 140 feet over a pool all while enjoying dance beats from the Double Six nightclub.

After your adventurous night, you can arrange for a spa treatment at your high end hotel’s in house spa service or if you are staying at a Bali villa rent, you can have an in villa spa treatment which can be arranged by the staff.  So if you have the money to burn and want to enjoy it, then visit Seminyak and soak up the prestige and sun. You won’t regret the expense or the memories.

The Islands of Bali: Nusa Penida

Terrace by the sea.jpg

One of Bali’s southeastern islands, Nusa Penida, is a spectacular place to come and visit while vacationing in Bali. This island paradise has several white sand beaches that offer peace and tranquility along its north and northwestern coasts. This island also boasts limestone caves and breathtaking high coastal cliffs. In the east and south of the island you will find some offshore pinnacles and in the center of the island you will find some rather rugged hilltops.

This island is also home to many interesting Hindu temples. As with the main island of Bali, remember if you are going to visit them be respectful and bring along a sarong if you plan on entering the temples. This island has some places for tourists to stay from low cost rooms to spectacular villas Bali. But there are some rather remarkable places to visit whether you are planning to stay overnight or just for a day trip. A place of great religious and cultural significance is the Goa Karang Sari, also known as Karansari Cave.  It is on the eastern coast and is located north of the Suana village, where you can find a local guide to help you get there, and don’t forget a flashlight. This rather large limestone cave has some unbelievable stalactites and other limestone formations.  Just make sure you are dressed appropriately since the entrance to this cave system is a short climb from the road and are, as with most caves, not known for having even ground to have great footing.

Another place to put on your list of sights to see before leaving your hotel or one of Bali villas for rent is Crystal Bay. West of Sakti village in the Banjar Penida facing Nusa Ceningan, you will find an astonishing white sand beach. The clear waters here are ideal for snorkeling and the beach is the perfect spot for a beach picnic.  This beach is usually quiet. If a nice walk through nature is something you are interested in, then maybe a visit to Puncak Mundi, Mundi Hill, is something that will peak your interest. This is the highest point of Nusa Penida. At the top you will be rewarded with an astonishing view of the island as well as Puncak Mundi Temple. Here you can also see Bali’s attempt at alternative energy.  You can find wind turbines and a solar panel farm on the top of Puncak Mundi as well.

A few of Nusa Penida’s temples should be on your must-see list as well.  Pura Penetaran Dalem at Ped village is another of Bali’s more important temples. Balinese Hindus make a yearly trek to this temple to pray for protection from illness, disease and death. This temple is one of the grander temples on the island which is in contrast to the somber nature of Nusa Penida. You won’t find tourist hotels or villas Bali near this spiritual landmark. Two other rather awe inspiring temples, Pura Batu Medahu and Pura Batu Kuning, can be found along the eastern coastal road near Suana village. These temples are a must see. One last stop that should be included in your itinerary is the Sebuluh Waterfalls.  If you are on Bali during the wet season, make sure you stop here for a rather impressive view.

Whether you see the island as a day trip or an overnighter, make sure that you get a souvenir and plenty of pictures and make sure to pack them away when you get back to the Bali villas for rent so you have them to show off to your envious friends back home.

The Islands of Bali: Nusa Lembongan

01pools

One of Bali’s outlying islands, Nusa Lembongan, is one of a few islands that are to the southeast of Bali. This island has some amazing things to offer tourists who come for a visit. It is rapidly becoming a popular tourist attraction.  It is an island paradise to escape from the hustle and bustle of the larger island paradise of Bali, especially the tourist hot spots in Southern Bali. You won’t see large amount of traffic that normally mars the beautiful views offered in different parts of Bali. This is a place you can come to wind down your vacation in Bali, kick up your feet to relax and enjoy some of the incredible beauty of the Indian Ocean. You can find some astonishing deals on a hotel room and on Bali villa rentals.

Nusa Lembongan has some phenomenal activities that bring you close to nature.  There is surfing, snorkeling along the coral reefs and diving in some of the most vivid and clear aqua blue water. This island is separated from the main island of Bali by the Badung Strait. You can find several white sand beaches off the beaten track where you will find seclusion, peace and tranquility. You may even find a Bali villa rental that overlooks some of this island’s stunning views.

If you are interested in agriculture, you may find the seaweed farming industry on this island interesting a worth the effort to check it out in between the amazing surfing and abundant marine life you will see while snorkeling. If you are staying in one of this island’s hotels, you may be in one overlooking Jungut Batu in the northwestern part of this island. Here you will find some rather inexpensive eateries, an unremarkable white sand beach and Bukit, the Hill, which are home to some multiple star hotels. Although, the views from Bukit are second to none and the sunset is spectacular when seen from the beachfront of Jungut Batu. If you are lucky enough your hotel room or Bali villa rental are close to this beach and you would be able to see this amazing sight from your window or patio.

There are some awesome natural wonders to be found on Nusa Lembongan. The Devil’s Tear is a rocky outcrop on the southwestern coast. Here you can see some rather remarkable water plumes and crashing waves. Just a little further south you can find two lesser known beaches, Dream Beach and Sunset Beach.  Here you can find some low lying limestone cliff and some sensational cave formations. On the north end of the island is lined with a mangrove forest. To the east, a shallow estuarine channel separates Nusa Lembongan from Nusa Ceningan, a neighboring island.

But if you want to go for walk through Lembongan village it is located in the southern end of the island. This is where most of the islands inhabitants live and it is here that you will find homes of traditional island families. So if you are up for a short boat ride from the southern part of the mainland island of Bali, you come and visit some of the natural island beauty on an island with little less than 5 square miles of land surrounded by some of the most beautiful waters and ocean life. You can stop by for a day visit or spend a few days in one of many island hotels and Bali villa rentals.

West Bali National Park: Heaven on Earth

1_Home imagenot for homepage.jpg

In the western end of the gorgeous and tropical island of Bali is the West Bali National Park region. This area encompasses the Prapat Agung Peninsula and a large part of land around the villages of Gilimanuk, Cekik, and Banyuwedang. The West Bali National Park makes up roughly 10 % of Bali’s total land mass. The area was first recognized as an important part of the island in 1918 when the council of Bali rulers first designated it as a nature park.   Iin 1941, the park was officially established as an Indonesian National Park. You won’t find any hotels or Bali villas for rent here, but it is a short ride from many local villages that have tourist accommodations, and it is a few hours’ drive from most major points of interest on the island.

This nature preserve is home to the nearly extinct Bali Starling. The presence of the Bali Starling in the park is the main reason for its being named as a National Park and therefore protected by Indonesian law.  It is also the home to over 160 species of bird that have been documented here.  This is truly a bird watchers’ paradise. With the efforts of wildlife specialists, a captive breeding program and re-introduction has been established to help increase the number of the Bali Starling in the national park.

When visiting the West Bali National Park, make sure you have the proper clothing before leaving your hotel room or Bali villas for rent. Sturdy shoes and comfy clothes are needed to enjoy the bountiful nature this park has to offer.  You can see many mammalian species in the park as well as the birdlife. There is a species of wild cattle that is similar to Balinese cows, called Banteng, which can be seen at the park, as well as the Java Rusa and the Indian Muntjac deer- these species can be spotted all over the West Bali National Park. The island off the coast of western Bali, which is considered part of the national park, is Menjangan Island. This island is named after the different species of deer in the park, in fact the name means ‘deer’ in the Indonesian dialect of Bahasa.

When leaving your Bali villas for rent or hotel room, make sure that you have the Tegal Blunder trail on your list of places to visit at the West Bali National Park. This trail is very popular with bird watching enthusiasts, and it takes about two hours to complete. You can find a ranger checkpoint at the village of Slumber Klampok, which is 20 minutes west of the Cekik village. At this checkpoint you can choose to continue on the Tegal trail, or you can choose to take the more strenuous Gunung Klatakan trail. This trail takes about five hours to complete, but it takes you through the most spectacular rainforest environment that will make it quite memorable.

If you want to visit the uninhabited splendor of Menjangan Island, you can enjoy the various marine life by diving or snorkeling. Take a charter boat from the northern edge of Teluk Terima Bay for a day visit to the island. You have to purchase a permit, and you have to be accompanied by a guide, so it is best to join a group that is going. When planning a trip to this island, just make sure that when leaving your Bali villas for rent you pack your swimsuit and bring a towel because the snorkeling here is spectacular with the clear and calm seas at your feet.

The Spa Experience

z-pg-master-suite1-6

One of the quintessential Bali experiences is The Spa. Spa Days can be a highlight of a vacation in Bali. Some villas in Bali have spas attached to them, especially those which are the luxury arms of five star resorts. The Balinese have had a centuries-long tradition of massage and body treatments and they have a natural aptitude towards making one feel pampered to the max!

One way to enjoy a spa treatment in the comfort of your Bali villa rental is to hire the services of one of the many peripatetic masseurs who ply their trade either as part of an organised business or simply by word of mouth. The advantage of having someone come to your Bali villa is that at the end of your treatment, they leave, not you!

There are so many spas in Bali that it can be difficult knowing which one to choose. As a rule of thumb, leave your Bali villa rental and go see for yourself! You will most likely be able to guess from the ambiance and the confidence of the staff. Happy, smiling staff members who will share a joke and are not intimidated talking to foreigners are more likely to give a better massage than timid little mice who wouldn’t say boo to geese.

A typical home-visit massage costs around Rp.100,000 for a tourist, maybe a thirty percent less for an expatriate resident. They will give you a good hour long massage and the best are really very, very good! A typical spa-based massage will be a lot more expensive but many come with added extras such as piping hot showers and crème baths.

The major advantages of a proper spa treatment begin with the massage bed. Regardless of how good the masseur is, without a proper cut out face cushion you’re simply not going to be as comfortable when lying on your front. The next major reason for taking a treatment at a spa is the increased range of treatments available. The author’s particular favourite treatment is the Shirodhara Oil massage. This Ayurvedic speciality begins with a light stream of warm oil poured onto the forehead above the third eye and then massaged down across the whole body. The best Shirodhara treatment involves a four-hand massage with two evenly matched practitioners working your body at the same time. Four handed massages are a speciality of the Balinese and are available in the villas of Bali for an extra special treat.
